Effects of divertor electrical drifts on particle distribution and detachment near the divertor target plate in DIII-D

چکیده

Strong impacts of drifts on the divertor plasma in–out asymmetry and detachment are demonstrated in DIII-D with an open configuration. For forward toroidal field, BT, i.e., ion B × ?B drift toward divertor, particle flux to inner as represented by Langmuir probe measured saturation current (Jsat), exhibits a double peak structure, electron temperature, lower at target. Reversing BT direction reverses both radial poloidal E flows, leading broad profile outboard scrape-off layer (SOL) similar double-peak structure that observed target BT. The correlation temperature profiles confirms physical coupling between flow sheath boundary condition their strong impact profiles. In addition, under reversed conditions, increasing density flattens profile. However, Jsat remains high away from strike point, rendering it difficult achieve “effective” detached plasma, effective reduction heat (in far SOL). contrast, cold flat can be achieved plates

EX/P4-21 The Effect of Magnetic Balance and Particle Drifts on Radiating Divertor Behavior in DIII-D

Success of the puff-and-pump radiating divertor approach depends sensitively on both the divertor magnetic geometry and the ion B B drift direction. In the puff-and-pump scenario used in this study, argon impurities were injected into the private flux region, while plasma flows into both the inner and outer divertors were enhanced by a combination of particle pumping near both divertor targets ...

Divertor Plasma Physics Experiments on the Diii–d Tokamak

DIVERTOR PLASMA PHYSICS EXPERIMENTS ON THE DIII–D TOKAMAK. In this paper we present an overview of the results and conclusions of our most recent divertor physics and development work. Using an array of new divertor diagnostics we have measured the plasma parameters over the entire divertor volume and gained new insights into several divertor physics issues. We present direct experimental evide...

Flow reversal, convection, and modeling in the DIII-D divertor

Measurements of the parallel Mach number of background plasma in the DIII-D tokamak divertor @M. A. Mahdavi et al. in Proceedings, 16th International Conference, Montreal, 1996 ~International Atomic Energy Agency, Vienna, 1997! Vol. I, p. 397# were performed using a fast scanning Mach probe. The parallel particle flow shows evidence of complex behavior such as reverse flow, i.e., flow away from...

An evaluation of kinetic eects in the DIII-D divertor

Under certain conditions, high temperature electrons di€using across the separatrix near the midplane can propagate to the divertor without collision and produce a high energy tail in the electron distribution function near the separatrix. We evaluate a kinetic criterion along the ®eld using measurements from divertor Thomson scattering and compare temperature measurements from target plate Lan...

An experimental comparison of gross and net erosion of Mo in the DIII-D divertor

Experimental observation of net erosion of molybdenum being significantly reduced compared to gross erosion in the divertor of DIII-D is reported for well-controlled plasma conditions. For the first time, gross erosion rates were measured by both spectroscopic and non-spectroscopic methods. In one experiment a net erosion rate of 0.73 ± 0.03 nm/s was measured using ion beam analysis (IBA) of a ...
